THE COMPETITION: DESIGNER’S WORKSTATION 2008 1. Introduction This competition event is focused on designing the ideal workstation for the designer of this new century. From the onset of design as a discipline, designers (interior, graphic, textile, rchitectural, industrial) hammered out their projects using a work table, a rawing table, or a desk. In the XXI century the computer is the main tool for sketching design. The emerging needs of today’s designers, together with the global, cultural and technological changes, demand a new uptodate workstation.
2. Objective of the competitio n Design the ideal work station for today’s designers. 3. P articipants The competition considers two categories: A. Students · I ndividu ally or as a team. Students can register for the competition individually or in teams, writing the names of each of the members on the registry card. B. Professionals · I ndividu ally o r a s a team. – Professionals can participate individually or in teams, writing the names of each of the members on the registry card. Note: Competitors must register in one of the two categories (A or B). 4. Design parameters Competitors must consider the following aspects for the creation of their designs: · Dimensions. - Dimensions will be determined by competitors. · M aterial s. - Materials will be determined by competitors. · Context. Even though work stations are usually generic, competitors must choose a context to put their design: a design classroom, an office, a room in a house, etc. This context may be real or virtual digitally created. This is a relevant aspect because the evaluation of the design will take into account the harmony and the environmental and spatial logic it keeps with the space chosen or created. · Specialty. – The competitors must indicate the design specialty corresponding to his/her proposal. These can be: graphic design, industrial design, fashion design, interior design, architecture, textile design, etc. 5. P resentatio n Requirements Digital image Designs must be presented as a digital image considering next requirements: · Digital format: Jpg · Weight: up to 750 KB · Mode: RGB · Resolution: 120 dpi · Size: 1500 x 1000 pixels so that it can be easily seen on a computer screen. The file name will be just the registry number of the competitor (e.g.: 200.jpg). 6. Assessment criteria and prizes Assessment criteria The following aspects of the proposals will be assessed: · Innovation. Originality in the concept and design of the proposal. · Functionality. Capacity of the proposal to respond to intended functions. · Materials. Correspondence between selected materials and design of the proposal. · Anthropometry. Design adjusted to anthropometric measures. · Context. Integration of the proposal to the chosen context. Awards The prizes will be the following: A. Category students First P rize: $ 2 ,000 USD Secon d P rize: $ 1,000 USD Third P rize: $ 50 0 USD Hono rable Mention: There will be five honorable mentions.
