January 31, 2008 is your deadline to enter!

Attention all industrial designers, 2D artists, and 3D illustrators: Do you think you have an almost paranormal ability to predict the future of Apple product development? Now’s your chance to show us what you’ve got!

Mac|Life, Maxon, and the Academy of Art University are cosponsoring a contest to find the best fictional product prototypes (aka “fauxtotypes”) laced with Apple design DNA. Whether your visions are imminently plausible or borderline absurd, we want to see how you interpret the future of Apple product design.

The best submissions will appear in Mac|Life magazine and on Maclife.com. Our grand prize winner will receive a scholarship for the Academy of Art University, and a boxed copy of Maxon Cinema 4D. Four runners-up, plus our grand prize winner, will each receive $100 gift cards for Newegg.com.

Note: Apple Inc is not involved with this contest in any capacity. We just happen to love the company’s products.

The Prizes

Academy of Art University Scholarship

With more than 11,000 students, Academy of Art University is the nation’s largest private art and design university. Established in 1929, the school offers accredited AA, BFA, M.Arch and MFA programs, as well as continuing art education with classes in copywriting, fashion merchandising, new media, computer animation, sculpture, graphic design, cinematography, interior design, digital photography and industrial design. Students can also enroll in a flexible online degree program in art and design.

This scholarship covers tuition waived towards one course at the Academy of Art University on campus or online. The scholarship must be used at the Academy of Art University on campus or online by Fall of 2008. The scholarship covers only 3 units, an estimated $1800.00 value. The contest winner will be responsible for all other costs incurred. The winner must posses a high school diploma or equivalent. If the winner does not meet this requirement then the scholarship must be applied to our pre-college program. If enrolling in a prerequisite course, the winner must be able to show prior experience or provide a portfolio.

Maxon Cinema 4D

This software package (an $895 value) is a professional favorite, and contains everything you’ll need to model and render high-end 3D images and animations. And, as we at Mac|Life discovered, it’s also quite easy to use, despite its pro-level pedigree. Maxon Cinema 4D Release 10 received an Editor’s Choice award and 5-star rating from Mac|Life in February 2007, and is the software Adam Benton used to create our own Apple Fauxtotypes.

Newegg.com

Selected as the "Best Place to Shop Online" for 3 years running by Computer Shopper Magazine, Newegg.com continues to demonstrate why it's one of the foremost online destinations for great deals on consumer electronics today. Please read both this section and the following Rules section carefully.

To enter the contest, you must submit the following:

(1) One to five high-resolution JPEGs of your own Apple product fauxtotype. We will accept JPEGs of either 3D models or 2D illustrations (i.e., traditional vector or raster art). Hand-drawn illustrations are acceptable, but they must be digitized and sent to us as JPEGs. Each JPEG file size should be no larger than 2MB.

(2) Your name, full mailing address, email address, contact phone number, the file names of your submitted JPEGs, and a write-up (500 words maximum) that includes the name of your fictional product, a description of all its relevant features, and an explanation of how your fauxtotype employs Apple design DNA. Your fauxtotype can belong to existing consumer product categories, but must be entirely of your own conception and design.
